Spacebank, an intelligent digital transformation (AIDX) specialist led by CEO Woney Lee, announced that it participated as the lead operating organization in the launch ceremony of the Defense AX Consortium, a collaborative initiative among the military, industry, academia, and research institutions aimed at accelerating AI-driven transformation in the defense sector.
The consortium brings together a broad range of stakeholders—including companies, universities, research institutes, and local governments—with the goal of fostering both defense AX advancement and corporate growth. Centered around Pangyo and the greater Seoul metropolitan area, the initiative seeks to leverage the region’s strong concentration of AI and ICT capabilities through close collaboration among key participants.
Aligned with the policy direction of the Ministry of National Defense, the consortium will focus on key initiatives such as ▲corporate mentoring for military-specific AI education programs ▲utilization of the Pangyo Defense Data Lab ▲consulting by defense experts ▲collaborative R&D in defense AI ▲and the sharing of the latest defense technology insights. In addition, quarterly technical exchange seminars and the operation of a dedicated consortium office are planned to ensure a sustainable and continuous collaboration platform.
As the lead operating organization, Spacebank will support the overall management of the consortium, coordinate collaboration among participating entities, and oversee the execution of pilot and integration programs. The company will also play a key role in identifying and driving practical collaborative projects across defense AX-related organizations.
Kim Jong-hwan, Head of AI Technology Requirements at the Army Training & Doctrine Command, stated, “The defense sector is rapidly undergoing transformation centered on AI. Through this consortium, we expect to build a collaborative framework where both the military and private sector can contribute to national security while advancing industrial development.”
The Defense AX Consortium includes major defense and ICT companies such as Hanwha Aerospace, Hanwha Systems, Samsung SDS, KT, and LIG Nex1, along with over 30 AI and software companies including Spacebank, MakinaRocks, WiseiTech, Konan Technology, Crowd Data, Funzin, and Hancom Lifecare. Supporting organizations such as the Gyeonggi Research Institute, Gyeonggi Business & Science Accelerator, Gyeonggi Center for Creative Economy & Innovation, and law firm Shin & Kim (Sejong) will provide advisory and operational support.
Woney Lee, CEO of Spacebank, commented, “The Defense AX Consortium is highly meaningful as an execution platform that connects policy, technology, and real-world operations. As the lead operator, we will ensure stable management and effective coordination so that participating organizations can achieve tangible collaborative outcomes.”
Meanwhile, Sungkyunkwan University in Korea has been operating a military-specialized AI education program since 2022, having trained 289 military personnel to date, with plans to train an additional 145 participants next year.
Kwang-soo Kim, Director of the AI Convergence Institute at Sungkyunkwan University, added, “It is time to move beyond education-focused collaboration toward a more practical cooperation model involving the military, academia, industry, and institutions. By linking defense AX hub development with physical AI technology innovation, we aim to establish Pangyo as a central hub for defense AX innovation.”
